Overview

About Change Image DPI

DPI (dots per inch) is a number stored inside a picture file that tells printers and photo apps how big to print it. A picture 600 pixels wide prints 2 inches (5.08 cm) wide at 300 DPI, or 3 inches at 200 DPI. The number does not change the pixels themselves, so the picture looks exactly the same on screen.

Some forms, portals and print shops ask for a picture at 300 DPI or 200 DPI. This tool writes the DPI you choose into the file: in the JFIF header and the EXIF data of a JPG, and in the pHYs chunk of a PNG. The picture data is copied as it is, so there is no quality loss and the file size changes by only a few bytes.

If a form asks for both a DPI and a size in pixels or cm, set the DPI here and the size with a resizing tool. The print size shown for each picture tells you whether it is big enough: at 300 DPI, a 3.5 x 4.5 cm passport photo needs about 413 x 531 pixels.

Everything runs in your browser. Your pictures are not uploaded.

When it helps

  • A photo or signature that an online form or office asks for at 200 or 300 DPI
  • Setting 300 DPI on pictures before sending them to a print shop or a printing press
  • Checking what DPI a picture has now and how big it will print
  • Changing the DPI of many scans or product photos at once

Pixels needed for common print sizes

How many pixels a picture needs to print at a size and DPI. Pixels = size in inches x DPI.

Good to know

  • Changing the DPI does not add detail. A small or blurry picture set to 300 DPI just prints smaller; it does not get sharper.
  • If a form also asks for a size in pixels, cm or KB, this tool does not change that. Use Resize & Compress Image to 100KB or the Exam Photo Resizer for it.
  • WebP has no place to store DPI, so WebP pictures are saved as JPG.
  • HEIC photos from iPhones are not supported. Share or save them as JPG first.

Troubleshooting

The form still says the DPI is wrong

Some forms really check the pixel size, not the DPI. Compare the width and height in pixels the form asks for with the size shown here, and resize the picture if they differ.

Windows still shows the old DPI

Make sure you opened the downloaded file (its name ends in -300dpi or similar), not the original.

It shows "no DPI set"

Many phone photos and screenshots do not store a DPI. Apps then assume 72 or 96. Pick a DPI and download to add one.

My iPhone photo is not accepted

HEIC photos are not supported. On iPhone, share the photo and choose JPG or Most Compatible.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does changing DPI reduce quality?

No. Only the DPI number stored in the file changes. The pixels are copied as they are, so the picture looks exactly the same.

How do I convert an image to 300 DPI?

Add the picture, choose 300 and press Download. The new file says 300 DPI and prints at the size shown in the list.

What is the difference between DPI and pixels?

Pixels are the dots the picture is made of. DPI only says how many of those dots go in one inch when it is printed, so it sets the print size.

How do I check the DPI of an image?

Add it here: the list shows the DPI it has now, or says no DPI is set. On Windows you can also see it under Properties, Details.

Will my photo print bigger at 200 DPI?

Yes. The same pixels spread over more inches, so at 200 DPI it prints 1.5 times as wide as at 300 DPI, and a little less sharp.

Can I change the DPI of many pictures at once?

Yes. Add up to 30, pick the DPI and press Download all to get them in one ZIP file.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The DPI is changed inside your browser and the picture never leaves your device.

Is it free?

Yes, free with no sign-up and no watermark.
