Overview

About the font

Terafont-Varun

Terafont-Varun belongs to the Terafont family of Gujarati fonts (Varun, Akash, Chandan, Gopika and others) that Gujarat government offices, courts and typing institutes have used for years to type circulars, notices and forms in MS Word and PageMaker. It is a legacy font: it stores Gujarati shapes in the places of English letters, so the text only reads correctly where Terafont-Varun is installed.

LMG Arun

LMG Arun is a legacy Gujarati font found in many older office, press and DTP documents. For all the common letters it uses the same keys as Terafont, so typists move between the two easily. Like Terafont it stores Gujarati shapes in the places of English letters, so the text needs the font installed to be read.

Why the text looks like English letters

Legacy Gujarati fonts were made before Unicode. They put Gujarati shapes in the places of English letters, so the file really stores letters such as "k" or "M". With the right font they look Gujarati; anywhere else, or after the font is changed, they look like random English. Unicode stores real Gujarati letters, so it reads the same everywhere.

Fix a problem

Common problems and fixes

The pasted text shows English letters

The legacy font is not selected or not installed. Select the text and choose the font, or install it first.

Some letters are wrong after conversion

Copy the exact word and the expected result and send it to us; the font table can be corrected.

There are wide gaps between some words

Turn off kerning for the text: in Word, Font > Advanced > untick Kerning for fonts. The text itself is correct.

A colon turned into a visarga, or the other way round

Legacy fonts draw ઃ and : the same. Inside a word it is read as visarga, before a space as a colon. Check words such as પુનઃ that end in visarga.

Word changes the font back after pasting

Use Paste Special > Unformatted Text, then select the text and set the font.

Text from a PDF does not convert well

Text copied from a PDF is often out of order. Copy from the original Word or PageMaker file if possible.

A long document is slow

Very long text is converted in the background; wait a moment for the Converting... message to finish.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Unicode and Terafont?

Unicode stores real Gujarati letters and works everywhere. Terafont stores English letters that only look Gujarati when the Terafont font is selected.

Which font do government offices in Gujarat use?

Many offices still type in Terafont-Varun or LMG Arun, while websites and new software use Unicode fonts such as Shruti. This converter moves text between them.

Is Shruti a legacy font?

No. Shruti is a Unicode font that comes with Windows, so text in Shruti needs no conversion.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.

Can I convert a whole Word file?

Yes. Under the text boxes, choose a .docx file. The Gujarati text is converted and its font changed, while bold, sizes and tables stay as they are. The file is not uploaded.
