How to Split a PDF by Page Range

Updated 22 October 2026 · 2 min read

A long PDF often has to be cut into parts: chapters, single pages, or just the pages someone asked for. Splitting by page range is simple once you know how ranges are written.

How page ranges are written

In Custom Ranges mode you type page numbers and dashes, separated by commas. Every comma-separated part becomes its own PDF.

  • 5-9 makes one file with pages 5 to 9. This is the way to extract pages.
  • 1-3, 4-8 makes two files: pages 1 to 3, and pages 4 to 8.
  • 2, 9, 12 makes three files with one page each, not one file with three pages.
  • Ranges may overlap. A page that is in two ranges appears in both files.

Extract pages into one new PDF

  1. Open Split PDF and choose your file. The page count is shown next to its name.
  2. Choose Custom Ranges and type one range, for example 12-15.
  3. The thumbnails of those pages are coloured, and the pages you did not choose are greyed out as Not included.
  4. Press the download button. One range gives one PDF.

Other ways to split

  • Every Page: each page becomes its own PDF, packed into one ZIP.
  • Every N Pages: the file is cut into parts of the number of pages you choose, such as 10 pages each. The last part can be shorter.

What the download contains

One file downloads as a normal PDF. More than one file downloads together as a ZIP named after your PDF, with names such as report_pages_1-3.pdf. Open the ZIP on your phone or computer to get the separate PDFs.

Pages that are not next to each other

One range always means pages in a row. To keep pages 2, 9 and 12 in one file, either delete all the other pages with Remove Pages, or extract each page and combine them with Merge PDF.

If it shows an error

The message under the range box tells you what is wrong: usually a number larger than the page count, or a range written backwards such as 5-3. Fix it and the download button turns on again.
