How to use CSV to JSON Converter

  1. 1

    Add your CSV

    Paste it, open a .csv or .tsv file, or press Try an example.

  2. 2

Overview

About CSV to JSON Converter

A CSV file is a table saved as plain text: one row per line, cells split by a separator. JSON describes the same data as named fields, which is what APIs, JavaScript, databases like MongoDB and most no-code tools expect. With the header row as keys, the CSV line Asha,28,Pune becomes {"name": "Asha", "age": 28, "city": "Pune"}.

The converter reads CSV the strict way (RFC 4180), so a cell in quotes can hold commas, line breaks and quote marks. It works out whether your file uses commas, semicolons (common when Excel is set to Indian or European regional settings), tabs or pipes. Numbers and true/false can become real JSON values, while codes that only look like numbers, such as 007, phone numbers with +91 or 16-digit IDs, stay as text so nothing is lost.

Headers with dots, like address.city and address.pin, can become nested objects. Empty header cells get names like column_3, and repeated names get _2, so no data is overwritten.

Everything runs in your browser. Your file is not uploaded, which matters for customer lists, sales data and exports from internal systems.

When it helps

  • Turning an Excel or Google Sheets export into JSON for an API or a website
  • Loading a product list or price list into a JavaScript app
  • Preparing data for MongoDB, Firebase or a no-code tool
  • Making JSON Lines for a bulk import or a data pipeline

How a CSV row becomes JSON

With the first row as the header and numbers detected.

CSVJSON
name,age,city / Asha,28,Pune{"name": "Asha", "age": 28, "city": "Pune"}
id,address.city (nested keys on) / 1,Surat{"id": 1, "address": {"city": "Surat"}}
note / "Hello, world"{"note": "Hello, world"}
pin / 011001{"pin": "011001"} (kept as text)
active / true{"active": true}
phone / (empty){"phone": null}

Good to know

  • Excel (.xlsx) files must be saved as CSV first; File > Save as > CSV in Excel, or File > Download > CSV in Google Sheets.
  • Very large files (over 10 MB) can slow a phone down, so they are not accepted.
  • Dates stay as text exactly as they appear in the CSV; they are not turned into a date format.
  • Only dots in header names create nesting; arrays inside cells are not split.

Fix a problem

Troubleshooting

Everything ends up in one field

The separator was not found. Choose it by hand under Separator: semicolon for many Excel exports, tab for data copied from a sheet.

It says a quote is never closed

A cell starts with " but has no closing ". Open the CSV, find that row and add the missing quote.

Hindi or other letters look broken

The file was not saved as UTF-8. In Excel choose CSV UTF-8 when saving, then open it again.

My numbers became text

Turn on Numbers and true/false as values. Numbers with leading zeros or a + sign stay text on purpose.

I need the keys from the first row but got arrays

Tick First row is the header and choose Array of objects.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CSV to JSON?

Paste the CSV or open the file, keep First row is the header ticked, and copy or download the JSON. Each row becomes one object with the header names as keys.

How do I convert an Excel file to JSON?

Save the sheet as CSV (in Excel: File > Save as > CSV UTF-8), then open that file here.

Can it make nested JSON from CSV?

Yes. Name columns with dots, such as address.city and address.pin, and turn on Nested keys. They become {"address": {"city": ..., "pin": ...}}.

Does it work with semicolon or tab separated files?

Yes. Comma, semicolon, tab and pipe are detected automatically, so TSV to JSON works too.

What is JSON Lines?

One JSON object per line with no surrounding array. Many databases and data tools import it in bulk; the file ends in .jsonl.

Why are some numbers kept in quotes?

Values like 007, 011001 or +919876543210 would lose their zeros or plus sign as numbers, and numbers longer than 15 digits lose accuracy, so they stay as text.

Is my CSV uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser and the data never leaves your device.

Is it free?

Yes, free with no sign-up and no limit.
