How to Insert a Blank Page in a PDF
Updated 3 November 2026 · 4 min read
Most PDF readers let you read a file but not add a page to it. Here is how to put one or more blank pages exactly where you want them, choose their size and paper, and make a completely new blank PDF when you need one.
Free toolAdd Page to PDFOpenWhy add a blank page
- A page for a signature, a stamp or handwritten notes at the end of a document.
- Double-sided printing, so that each new section starts on the front of a sheet.
- A placeholder where a missing page will go later.
- Padding a document to the number of pages a form or a printer expects.
How to insert a blank page, step by step
- Open Add Page to PDF and choose your PDF. You see how many pages it has.
- Keep Blank pages selected.
- Under Where, choose At the start, After page and a number, or At the end. After page 3 puts the new page between page 3 and page 4.
- Type how many blank pages you want, from 1 to 200.
- Leave Page size on Same as the page next to it, or choose A4, Letter, Legal or A5.
- Pick the paper: Plain, Lined, Grid or Dotted.
- Press Add pages and download. The new file is named pages_added_ followed by your file name. Your original is not changed.
The pages that were already in the PDF are copied as they are, so nothing gets blurry. Everything happens in your browser and the PDF is not uploaded.
“Same as the page next to it”
This is the default because it makes the new page look like it belongs. The blank page takes the size of the page that will come straight after it. When you add pages at the end, it takes the size of the last page. If that page is turned sideways, the blank page is made sideways too. The fixed sizes, A4, Letter, Legal and A5, are always upright (portrait).
Page sizes the tools support
| Size | Millimetres | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 x 297 mm | 8.27 x 11.69 in |
| Letter | 215.9 x 279.4 mm | 8.5 x 11 in |
| Legal | 215.9 x 355.6 mm | 8.5 x 14 in |
| A5 | 148 x 210 mm | 5.83 x 8.27 in |
A4 is the usual size in India. Letter and Legal are mostly used for documents from the USA. If your PDF mixes sizes, for example A4 pages with one Legal page, “Same as the page next to it” follows whichever page the new one sits in front of, so check that page before you choose.
Plain, lined, grid or dotted
- Plain is a completely empty page.
- Lined has rules 8 mm apart and a red margin line, like a notebook.
- Grid has 5 mm squares, handy for sums and diagrams.
- Dotted has a dot every 5 mm, for sketches and bullet journals.
The lines are a light grey-blue that prints softly and works well with handwriting apps on tablets.
Adding other pages instead of blank ones
The same tool can insert other things at the same chosen place:
- Pages from another PDF: all its pages go in together, in their own order. Its bookmarks and links are not carried over.
- Pictures as pages: up to 50 JPG, PNG or WebP pictures, 30 MB each. Each becomes one page, fitted inside a 10 mm margin without stretching.
Making a blank PDF from scratch
If you do not have a PDF yet and just need an empty one, use Blank PDF instead. It makes real pages of the exact size, not a picture of a page, so the file opens and prints correctly everywhere.
- Open Blank PDF and choose Plain, Lined, Grid or Dotted.
- Choose A4, Letter, Legal or A5, and portrait or landscape. Unlike Add Page to PDF, Blank PDF can make landscape pages.
- Type the number of pages, from 1 to 500.
- Press Download. The file is named after your choices, for example blank-a4-1-page.pdf.
Limits
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.
- The PDF can be up to 150 MB.
- Line spacing and colours of lined, grid and dotted paper are fixed.
- If you added too many pages or put them in the wrong place, start again from your original file, or remove the extra pages with Remove Pages.
Check the result
- Open the new file and go to the place where you added the page. It should sit exactly between the pages you meant.
- Count the pages: the new file should have the old number plus the pages you added.
- If you print double-sided, print one test sheet first to make sure each section now starts on the front.
When you print a blank or lined page, choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Fit to page shrinks it, and most printers cannot print to the very edge of the paper anyway.

Put new pages into your PDF exactly where you need them: blank pages, the pages of another PDF, or photos and scans.
